A Nigerian police officer, Sgt. Abraham Uzuobo, is facing disciplinary action after allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl who was in custody at the South-Ibie police division in Edo State. The incident occurred on October 10, 2024.
The victim, who was detained on charges of possessing stolen property, was allegedly assaulted by Uzuobo while the female officer on duty, Inspector Edith Eduma, was briefly away. According to reports, Uzuobo took the girl to the administrative department and exploited her vulnerability.
A video of the incident, obtained by Daily Trust, reportedly shows the victim lying on the floor while Uzuobo, caught with his pants down, argues with the policewoman who discovered them.
Following the incident, Inspector Eduma accused Uzuobo of blackmailing her to cover up the rape. She claimed he threatened to release the video online unless she accepted a bribe. While these allegations are still under investigation, the police force has confirmed that both officers are facing dismissal.
The police public relations officer, SP Moses Yamu, has promised to release a statement regarding the incident but has not yet provided any details.
