The gloved hand swept across the surface, moving drawers with a practiced efficiency. It wasn’t a simple search; it was an interrogation. The person knew exactly what they were looking for. Daniel felt a cold dread sink into his stomach.
They were looking for the map. They were looking for the secret he had just unearthed.
A heavy silence fell again, broken only by the rhythmic, muffled sound of the intruder’s breathing. Then, the sound of metal sliding against wood. A drawer had been forced open. Daniel held his breath until his lungs burned, watching as the figure leaned over the desk, their silhouette blocking the faint light from the window.
Suddenly, the intruder stopped. They turned their head, scanning the room with a slow, methodical gaze that seemed to pierce right through the shadows. Daniel pressed himself harder against the bookshelf, the sharp edge of a hardback volume digging into his spine. He was certain the intruder could hear his heart, a frantic drumbeat in the stillness.
The figure began to walk toward the bookshelf. Each step was measured, deliberate. Daniel’s mind raced. He couldn’t stay here, but any movement would be suicide.
As the silhouette drew closer, the metallic, ozone scent intensified, making his head swim.
Just as the intruder reached the edge of the rug, a sudden, sharp crack echoed from the floorboards near the door. Daniel froze.
