The Girl Who Lost Everything but Refused to Lose Herself Episode 1

Season 1 · Episode 1

The day everything changed

  •  The Day Everything changed

Lily had always believed her mother never kept secrets from her.

She was wrong.

It was an ordinary Tuesday morning when everything began.

“Lily! You’ll be late for school!”

Lily groaned and pulled her blanket over her head.

“I’m coming!”

She quickly got dressed, grabbed her schoolbag and hurried downstairs.

Her mother was standing in the kitchen, preparing breakfast.

“You’re late again,” her mother said.

“I know. I know.”

Lily grabbed a piece of bread and smiled.

Her mother smiled back, but something about her expression seemed different.

“What’s wrong?” Lily asked.

“Nothing.”

“You’re doing that thing again.”

“What thing?”

“Pretending you’re fine when you’re clearly not.”

Her mother laughed softly.

“Maybe you know me too well.”

Lily smiled.

At the time, she didn’t realize how important those words would become.

After school, Lily returned home earlier than usual.

The house was quiet.

“Mom?”

No answer.

She walked into the living room and noticed something sitting on the table.

An old wooden box.

Lily had never seen it before.

She reached for it.

Before she could open it, her mother rushed into the room.

“Lily!”

Lily jumped.

“What?”

“Don’t touch that.”

Her mother’s voice was unusually sharp.

Lily slowly pulled her hand away.

“Why?”

Her mother grabbed the box.

“It’s nothing.”

“If it’s nothing, why can’t I see it?”

“Because it’s private.”

Lily stared at her.

Her mother had never spoken to her like that before.

“Okay,” Lily said quietly.

Her mother carried the box upstairs.

But Lily couldn’t stop thinking about it.

That night, Lily heard her mother moving around in the hallway.

She opened her bedroom door slightly.

Her mother was standing outside her own room, holding the wooden box.

Lily watched silently.

Her mother opened it.

Inside were several old photographs.

One photograph slipped from the box and fell onto the floor.

Her mother quickly picked it up.

But Lily had already seen it.

There were two girls in the photograph.

One was her mother.

The other was a girl Lily had never seen before.

Her mother stared at the photograph for several seconds.

Then she whispered:

“I’m sorry, Emily.”

Lily’s heart skipped.

Emily?

Who was Emily?

And why had her mother never mentioned her?

Her mother suddenly looked toward Lily’s bedroom.

Lily quickly closed the door.

She climbed back into bed, pretending she had seen nothing.

But she couldn’t sleep.

The next morning, Lily waited until her mother left for work.

Then she went into the living room.

The wooden box was still there.

She opened it.

Photographs filled the inside.

Most showed her mother when she was younger.

But one photograph caught Lily’s attention.

It showed the same girl from the night before.

Emily.

Beside her stood Lily’s mother.

And in the background was an old building.

A faded sign above the entrance read:

ST. MARY’S HOME.

Lily turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

For Lily. When the time is right, she deserves to know the truth.

Lily froze.

Her name.

Why was her name written on a photograph from before she could even remember?

She looked at the date.

It was eleven years old.

She was only a child.

Something was very wrong.

Then she heard the front door open.

Her mother was back.

Lily quickly put the photograph back into the box.

She closed it and stepped away.

Her mother entered the room.

They looked at each other.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then her mother asked quietly:

“Did you open that box?”

Lily swallowed.

“No.”

Her mother stared at her.

And Lily realized something.

Her mother knew she was lying.

But instead of getting angry, her mother simply looked heartbroken.

“Lily,” she whispered, “there are some things about our family that you don’t know.”

“What things?”

Her mother looked away.

“Things I hoped you’d never have to discover.”

Lily’s heart began beating faster.

“Who is Emily?”

Her mother went completely still.

She didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Lily already had her answer.

Her mother knew Emily.

And whatever happened to her was connected to Lily’s past.

That evening, Lily returned to her room and looked at the photograph again.

She noticed something she hadn’t seen before.

In the corner of the picture was a little girl.

A little girl wearing a silver bracelet with a flower-shaped charm.

Lily looked down at her own wrist.

She was wearing the exact same bracelet.

Her heart began racing.

She had worn it for as long as she could remember.

But suddenly, it didn’t feel like a piece of jewelry anymore.

It felt like a clue.

Lily stared at the photograph.

“Who are you, Emily?”

She didn’t know it yet, but that question would lead her into a secret her family had spent years trying to bury.

And once Lily started searching for the truth…

There would be no turning back.
